Maha Shivratri Baijnath – Festival Guide

Maha Shivratri at Baijnath — Overview

Maha Shivratri at Baijnath is one of the most important religious events in all of Himachal Pradesh. It is celebrated as a five-day state-level festival at the ancient Vaidyanatha temple, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims.

Why is it Special at Baijnath?

Baijnath houses the Ardhnarishwara Shivling connected to Ravana’s devotion to Lord Shiva. The belief that this Shivling was personally associated with Ravana makes Shivratri celebrations here uniquely charged with devotional energy.

The Five Days of Celebration

The festival begins with pre-dawn rituals on day one and builds to a climax on the main Shivratri night. Daily events include abhishek (ritual bathing of the Shivling), recitation of Shiva Purana, devotional music, and a large mela with vendors from across the region.

The Main Shivratri Night

Thousands of devotees observe an all-night vigil chanting Om Namah Shivaya. Four prahara puja ceremonies are performed through the night. The temple is illuminated and decorated with flowers.

When is Maha Shivratri?

Maha Shivratri falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna in the Hindu calendar, in February or March each year. Check the Hindu calendar for the exact date of the current year.
